The HBO documentary of Gasland directed by John Fox the main character showed the effects of how natural gas drilling affected communities in the United States. John Fox lived in Milaville, Pennsylvania was a part of the Marcellus Shale which he said was the Saudi Arabia of natural gas, and a natural gas company offered John Fox along with others in the Marcellus Shale $4,000 plus for each acre of owned land and John Fox would gain over $100,000. John Fox wanted to learn more about natural gas drillings that took place in other areas, and when John Fox traveled and talked to residents in other locations he found out how those residents were suffering through the natural gas drillings. One resident dealt with stomach pains since she along with others were drinking contaminated water. A mother of a family said that she didn’t want to use any water in the house because of how contaminated it was, and she also showed John Fox how the family animals were suffering through the ability not to have water as the cats and horse was losing their hair. When John Fox visited a man he had a note above his sink saying “Do not drink this water” and when the man turned the water on he took a lighter to show that water wasn’t coming out of the sink, but it was natural gas as the natural gas light a fire when it contacted with the lighter. As the film progressed John Fox tried getting in touch with gas industry executives to ask about natural gas, and the problem residents were having with their water system. The mood for me as I was watching bothered me since there were families and animals suffering through the non usage of water that was found at each of house of the residents. I couldn’t imagine going days and maybe even weeks without fresh running water, and every time I turned on the sink or went to take a shower natural gas would come out instead of water. Considering how important water is to the human life it was shocking to see how residents had to adjust their lifestyle because of the natural gas drilling, and the effects of not having fresh water showed with the impact it had with the cats and horse at the one residents house. The difference documentaries have rather than action, horror, comedy, or other genres of movies is that documentaries are based on real events with real storylines like natural gas drillings and the results residents had to deal with that was featured in Gasland. Watching Gasland and the hunt that John Fox was on to fix the problems of natural gas drillings and the results it has on residents was eye opening, and it showed with the awards that John Fox won and was nominated for.
